Teacher Best Practice Conference
The second Schools That Can (STC) Teacher Best Practice Conference was held on May 22, 2010 in Newark to coincide with the STC Newark Forum. Teacher Best Practice Conferences are a major initiative for STC as part of our collaborating for a quality education focus.
Close to 50 teachers participated. Seven Master Teachers from STC schools in New York City and Newark were recognized and awarded a Master Teacher certificate. They each briefly made a best practice presentation which had great value. In addition, another 11 teachers were recognized for their accomplishments as well.
The teachers were treated to opening remarks from Ryan Hill, Founder and Executive Director of Team Schools in Newark. Ryan is a dynamic speaker and everyone appreciated his presence. He was followed by a best practice presentation from Fred Murphy, Distinguished Master Teacher in Social Studies at Frederick Douglas Academy. After the Master Teachers presented, a further treat was a presentation by Peg Tyre, the acclaimed author of Trouble With Boys, an award winning book on the challenges schools face in educating boys.
Reactions were extraordinary. Teachers were very moved by this rare opportunity for recognition and recognizing peers in their midst. Teachers spoke about the pride they felt looking forward to hanging their certificate in their classrooms. STC is so encouraged by the feedback and will move forward to conduct Teacher Best Practice Conferences in all STC cities next year. Sometimes the easiest thing to do is saying thank you but this well deserved recognition goes a long way towards building trust and providing a role model to emulate. What better way to collaborate for a quality education.
