Inside Citizens Academy in Cleveland: Building a Culture of Excellence

Citizens Academy is a stellar example of a school that can. 80% of its students are from disadvantage, with over 75% of students coming from single parent homes, foster care, or extended family living situations. And yet, 98% of their students test proficiently in 4th grade math, which is considerably higher than the national average.

What are results like this attributed to?

A committed team: “We are all here for the children… We set high standards, and we are excited about it.”

An extended school day: “Having an extended school day adds six weeks to the school year. We want children to get the most out of their day.”

Parental involvement; every home is visited before the start of the new year: “Academic success often precedes parental involvement. We create the conditions that bring out the best in adults, staff and parents, and our children.”

With the release of two outstanding videos, we can now take a look inside Citizens Academy and undeniably see for ourselves what a strong school culture with enthusiastic teachers and leaders can do for a child’s life.
