Bloomberg Announces Record High Graduation in NYC
I want to share an announcement made this morning by Mayor Bloomberg.
This year 60% who started 9th grade in NYC graduated on time. This is a record high. Five years ago the number was below 50%. A real accomplishment.
However, when you carefully look at the details, 6 high schools accounted for 25% of college ready graduates, even though they have only 7% of the students.
Islands of excellence, such as STC schools, are a critical beginning but we must realize that spreading cultures of success to the other 93% of students is the critical future step.
Our approach of collaboration and sharing of effective practices cross sectors is an important beginning towards truly eliminating the achievement gap. It forms the building block to reach the other 93%. This is important work.
Check out the article at the Wall Street Journal for more on the announcement.
