Mixed Income Integration Increases Quality Education in East Lake

The Charles Drew Charter School in Atlanta welcomes low and middle income students into their gates. The neighborhood of East Lake has gone from being in the slums to a progressive environment for living. Integration of a variety of incomes to the neighborhood has proven difficult, but has shown improvement to student test scores, learning abilities and an overall development of the area. According to the Coleman Report, a famous study commissioned by the federal education department in 1967, “low-income students in diverse settings do better academically, and also later in life, probably because they encounter children with middle-class experiences and aspirations, and join higher-achieving social networks.”
