How STC Schools are Prepping for the Common Core: Boston Collegiate Charter School
Lauren Manganiello, director of instruction at the Boston Collegiate Charter School, has shared with us the progressive steps BCCS is taking towards Common Core integration. What are your thoughts on the Common Core? Does your school reflect how BCCS is adapting to the standards? Sound off in the comments section below:
“Boston Collegiate Charter School, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, serves over 600 students in grades 5 through 12. Our mission is to prepare each student for college, and in doing so, we offer an academically rigorous college preparatory curriculum for all students. Our goal is to instill in our students the expectation of college from the moment they walk through our doors.
Boston Collegiate is nearing full alignment to Common Core. Last year, we focused on the major shifts of the Common Core standards, including visual analysis, and non-fiction reading and writing across all content areas. This year, teachers are engaging in a year-long curriculum review using our internally developed Common Core Scope and Sequence documents. Each department also identified a Common Core “growth” standard on which to focus for the year. Externally, Boston Collegiate is collaborating with two local schools as part of a grant-funded endeavor to create its own Common Core aligned performance task for 9th graders in Literacy and Mathematics.”
