Schools That Can unites leaders to expand the quality urban education, and in spirit of our mission, we united Lieutenant General Robert Caslen, USMA Superintendent, with other prominent leaders — from education, university, and industry — at the Schools That Can National Forum in Harlem.
Informed by his unique position, Lieutenant General Caslen spoke wisely to education’s impact on our wellbeing as a nation, and like Schools That Can, he understands education quality effects not only our students, but also the entire nation and our relationship with the world. On behalf of the country, he applauded the work of STC school leaders and pledged to help expand quality urban education through West Point’s relationship with Schools That Can.
West Point is devoted to enhancing the effectiveness of STEM education in the US has been working with STC to connect with students on the value of West Point programs including the Summer Leaders Experience for high school juniors and becoming a cadet. Lieutenant General Caslen’s message echoed that of former NYC Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, another leader united with STC, who spoke on the direct relationship between quality education and our national security for the STC Forum. With Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Klein co-chaired the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)–sponsored Independent Task Force’s report U.S. Education Reform and National Security. The report found that the “United States’ failure to educate its students leaves them unprepared to compete and threatens the country’s ability to thrive in a global economy and maintain its leadership role.”
Schools That Can understands the importance of building students’ skill sets and will continue to identify leaders and partnerships to enhance the quality of schools serving urban youth in our country #BecauseStudentsCan become global citizens.
