Since 1983, the Civicorps Job Training Center has given educational and employment opportunities to 50,000 adolescents and young adults in the Oakland community.
Last week it opened its official new building to further serve the 18- 24 year old underprivileged youth in the city. The organization will be able to continue its efforts in helping these young adults earn their high school diplomas, find living wage jobs and attend post-secondary education and training. “Last year, 82 percent of the students went to college, and the rest directly into jobs. The Job Training Center will increase opportunities for Corpsmembers to earn industry recognized certifications that will help them to find well paid jobs upon graduation,” said Civicorps Executive Director Alan Lessik. This 15,000 square foot institution will administer academic classes and job training programs for individuals. A regular day for a Corpsmember includes entering the building at 7:30 am to start off with physical training. This activity leads into their daily paid jobs in regional parks, streams, trails and a path along the highway as well as attendance in classes they need more help in.
