Students at the Harlem Academy learn more than just the average 7th grade biology. In studying the human body, they also learn about the emergency medical techniques required to help the body heal. During the fall semester, they go through an intensive study of the human body and learn about the 12 human systems during the second trimester. In the spring, the scholars examine what happens when these systems break down or when a person experiences extreme pain. The seventh graders work together in dramatized scenarios to understand the symptoms and causes of  different injuries. They then practice the actions taken to treat patients like splinting broken bones, stabilizing neck and spinal injuries and dressing wounds. The students are also taught the protocols utilized by emergency medicine professionals to remain calm and effectively assess patient symptoms and safety conditions in an emergency situation.
