What We Stand For:

Global Leadership Academy Charter School (GLA) is a Kindergarten through Eighth Grade school with two wonderfully organized small learning communities located in West and Northeast Philadelphia. GLA is a holistic teaching and learning environment. Our goal is to provide a solid educational program developed through global studies and leadership skills to develop future leaders of the world.

Global Leadership Academy Charter School will nurture creative leaders who will be globally competitive yet compassionate. As holistic educators, we will not only prepare our students for the 21st Century work place, but prepare students to bring change to a better world. Completing its third year of serving children and families after restructuring the original charter, GLA enrolls more than five hundred and forty students in grades kindergarten through eight. Although we have a strong community base of enrollment from the West Philadelphia community, our global studies curriculum attracts students from other Philadelphia communities including Southwest Philadelphia, North Philadelphia, Northeast Philadelphia and Northwest Philadelphia. It is our goal that GLA students graduate endowed with the knowledge to continue to carve out new paths in the global community. It is this level of emotional intelligence, social intelligence and spiritual intelligence that will propel students to persist through high school and gain the fortitude required to successfully attain their life mission and goals.

Effective Practices:

At GLA, our goal is to provide our students with a well-rounded education. In addition to a standard education, Leadership Development and Global Studies–instructional themes of the GLA Curriculum–are infused into all academic disciplines. GLA’s educational goal is to provide a learning environment that encompasses principled, centered perspectives–while nurturing student creativity and sensitivity.

What is Global Studies?

Global Studies is a program that promotes interdisciplinary and cross-cultural learning and research on global issues that pose urgent and complex challenges to our world. Our Global Studies program prepares our students to be active, knowledgeable citizens of a global society. Through international studies, students learn to understand how their actions as individuals impact the larger community. Most importantly, they learn to genuinely respect and accept the differences that make people and their cultures unique. Our goal is to have our students think globally, but act locally – through volunteerism and service to the communities.

What is Leadership Development?

The leadership development of students is a vital focus of GLA. “Preparing Future Leaders of the World” is more than just our motto. It is what today’s society requires of our students in order to be productive global citizens.

What are the goals of the leadership theme?

• To develop in every student an awareness of his or her own leadership potential.
• To assist young people in developing essential leadership skills, such as self-control, service, confidence, humbleness, and efficiency which will enable them to act responsibly in all aspects of their lives.
• To develop global citizens who possess the leadership ability to meet present and future challenges in a global society
• To provide students with opportunities to learn and practice essential leadership skills within a learning community as well as the community at large.

How are these Goals Developed?

• Global Leadership Preparation
• Study of World Cultures through thematic learning
• Cultural off-site experiences
• Character Building
• Extended day and year learning programs
• Principled and Values Centered School
• Family Focused Experiences
• Community Partnerships
• Standards Based Educational Program
