Building Real-World Learning: Design Days2019-05-20T21:54:18+00:00

Design Days

The Design Day is an exciting annual event that brings together middle schoolers, local companies, and community members to engage in a fun and engaging design thinking activity. We bring together students from our local network of schools to tackle a real-world challenge presented to them by local community leaders. Students collaborate in teams, supported by corporate and community volunteers, to create a prototype of their solution. In the afternoon, students make pitches to a panel of judges. The day typically ends with an awards ceremony and celebration reception.

“From the feedback that I got from the students, [The Design Day Challenge] was an invaluable experience to see how the stuff they learn in the classroom connects to something in real life.”

Andrew B., Newark Boys Chorus School

“Haven Academy was thrilled to participate in Schools That Can’s Design Day challenge that brought together scholars from a variety of backgrounds to dream up solutions for real-life issues. The event boosted our scholars’ self-esteem and allowed them to interact with new kids who share the same interests.”

Jessica N., Mott Haven Academy

“I loved how the students applies their ideas to a real life problem/concept within Newark – I wish I had this when I was in school.”
