Student Q&A Series: Nia, student at South Bronx Community Charter High School

Right now, so many teens are facing intense pressure to succeed, balancing high school classes while trying to figure out their entire future. It is stressful, exhausting, and filled with self-doubt. That is why I created this interview series. We are sitting down with students and teachers to get real about job stress, building true confidence, and finding your path. I want to show the hard truths of figuring out a career while you are still in school, and remind you that you don't have to navigate it alone. The next interview features Nia, a South Bronx Community Charter High School student. - Luvany, STC intern

What's your dream career?

I want to be a veterinarian, because I want to help animals become and stay healthy.

What career-related experiences or lessons have you enjoyed here at SBC?

One career experience that I enjoyed was networking day when many people with different job experience talked to us about their interests and how they got their job.

How do you feel about career readiness here at this school?

I feel confident about the career readiness at my school because they prepare us for our future and gives us opportunities to gain job experiences.

What is one hands-on skill that you've learned that will help you get a job later on?

One hands-on skill that I learned was when I was working in SYEP. I had to advocate for the Bronx. I learned how to make a presentation that represents the importance of what I was advocating for.

When you think about life after high school graduation, do you feel like you have a good idea of what you want to do, or are you still searching for a goal?

I feel like I have a really good idea of what I want to do. I'm sure I want to go to college, specifically Auburn University, and I want to study to become a veterinarian.

What is one thing you wish people knew about how hard young people, or students, work to find out their careers while they're still in school?

One thing I wish people knew about how hard students work to figure out their careers while they're still in school is that we can change our minds really easily. And sometimes we overthink too much, to the point where we feel like we're not good enough to be in this career choice that we want. So, we change our minds and go to something different.
