By Alusha Olivier, STC Newark intern

When you’re good at what you do, it spreads. Right? Look at Schools That Can (STC) Newark, an organization that helps students at different schools around Newark. As an intern at STC Newark, I started to look into how partners and schools found out about the organization. It seems most partners heard of them from the work they do and have been doing for the past 15 years. The fact that more and more schools are asking for STC Newark’s help is great because it shows what STC Newark is doing is having a big impact on students.

One school partner is People’s Prep Charter School, where I attend high school. Manounshka Adams, People’s Prep’s Internship Teaching Assistant, said she found out about STC Newark when she started working at People’s Prep, saying  “STC Newark is responsible and we at People’s Prep crave to support anyways we can.” Amy Pozmantier Eberly, the Community Programs Manager for People’s Prep, said, “I chose and continue to work with STC because of their responsiveness and desire to truly help in any way they can.” The team at STC Newark is truly grateful for this feedback because they work hard everyday just to support schools, providing resources to teachers and students. Though I have only been at STC Newark for a few months, I can say that the programs STC Newark hosts are exceptional and unique in many aspects while also supporting the mission of partner schools.

As a nonprofit organization with a goal to make students ready for real world success, STC Newark provides nearly all of its services at no cost to the schools, depending on grants, corporations, individuals, and fundraisers to cover costs. “STC Newark’s programs provide Newark students with additional opportunities that allow them to tap into their potential and capabilities,” as stated by Manoushka Adams. By doing this, STC Newark is motivating students to participate in more rigorous programs that will benefit their future.  STC Newark engages students and opens up pathways to real-world success, while developing teachers to look beyond school walls and bring the real world into the classroom.

STC Newark is helping me as one of those students by giving me the opportunity of being their intern, one of the best ways to learn new things and explore my horizons for the future. If all Newark students and schools worked with STC Newark, I think we would all be on a stronger path to success.
