Jose Alcala is an Architect, Industrial Designer, Renewable Energy Specialist and Educator. He has over 25 years of experience in both the practical and theoretical areas of the design field. He has been involved in a wide range of projects, from electronics, to furniture, to exhibits, to buildings. He has been awarded ten patents and one provisional patent and has received several awards for both his architectural and product design work. He maintains a strong alliance to both disciplines.

As an educator Mr. Alcala previously held teaching positions at the University of Arkansas and Pratt Institute’s Industrial Design Department in Brooklyn, NY. He is currently University Lecturer and Coordinator of the Industrial Design Department at New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ where he has been intimately involved in the creation and development of the department from its inception. In 2011 he received the “Excellence in Instruction from a University Lecturer Award” at NJIT and was named one of the “30 Most Admired Educators of 2014” by the Design Futures Council.

Mr. Alcala is co-founder of two companies that serve the industrial, architectural and sustainable fields of design – MADLAB, LLC and RELAB, LLC. RELAB, LLC. has recently become a division of the renewable energy integrator altPOWER, Inc, where he has been appointed Chief Design Officer in charge of Design and Product Development of building integrated photovoltaic and renewable energy systems.

He is a Registered Architect in the State of New Jersey and Pennsylvania and a member of the America Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA).
