Schools That Can New York Partners With Grow with Google for Design Day Challenge for Middle Schoolers

NEW YORK (October 25th, 2019) Schools That Can New York and Grow With Google are partnering to hold a Design Day Challenge for middle schoolers on October 25th, 2019. The Design Day Challenge brings together teams of middle schoolers from Schools That Can network schools across the city of New York to collaborate with local businesses and community members, in order to participate in a fun, engaging design thinking activity. Students will be given a real-world problem and work together to design solutions before presenting to a panel of professional judges. This year, students will take over the Grow With Google NYC Learning Center to work with local partners and mentors in order to bring their creative solutions to life.

“Design Day is an incredible opportunity for students to work as a team, make decisions, and empower and learn from each other, says Arana Shapiro, Executive Director of Schools That Can NYC. “We see Design Day as an opportunity for our schools to come together and inspire their communities, while engaging with design thinking.” Schools That Can NYC is also the host of the Schools That Can National Forum in 2020, an annual conference bringing together education thought leaders and partners.

A hands-on experience, the Design Day Challenge is an innovative program designed to get students working together and immersing themselves in real-world solutions to challenges facing their community. At the conclusion of the day, they will present their solutions to leading industry experts including designers, engineers, and urban planners.

Students will use a collection of materials including modeling clay, Legos, pipe cleaners, and cardboard to create innovative designs. In addition to a hands-on opportunity for real-world learning and design thinking, the STC NYC Design Day Challenge empowers youth as leaders in shaping their communities, and engages them with stakeholders and local experts to create a vision for part of the city.

The Design Day Challenge & Celebration will take place Friday, October 25th, 2019. All are welcome to attend the celebration from 3PM-4:45PM, where you can meet the students, see the designs, vote on your favorite, and celebrate the winning teams: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/stc-nyc-design-day-challenge-and-celebration-tickets-72276838971
